We did not make God our father, He made us children. What marvellous love the Father has extended to us! Just look at it—we’re called children of God! That’s who we really are (1 John 3:1). We are recipients of God’s marvellous love!
The Loving Heart of God
He sent the spirit of sonship into our hearts, and now we are bold to call him Father (Romans 8:15). He gave us the fellowship of his Spirit, he called us into the same relationship he has with His Son, Jesus Christ. He has become intimate with us much more than we could ever be with Him. Yes, he loved us and could not bear to see us destroyed because of our sins. His heart pants continuously for us. He seeks every opportunity to have a relationship with us, to share his secrets and concerns with us. He put his love on the line for us by offering his Son in sacrificial death while we were of no use whatever to him (Romans 5:8).
The only possession God has is His Son, Jesus Christ, because everything else has been made subjected to Jesus Christ. This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life (John 3:16). There was no guarantee whatsoever that we would love Him back or accept His gift.
He took the initiative because he knew the importance. And this comes at no cost to us. Christ arrives right on time to make this happen. He didn’t, and doesn’t, wait for us to get ready. He presented himself for this sacrificial death when we were far too weak and rebellious to do anything to get ourselves ready. And even if we hadn’t been so weak, we wouldn’t have known what to do anyway (Romans 5:7-8). Yes, he died in our place for the punishment of our sins. We therefore have no sins again. Christ has borne our punishment.
God’s Invitation to Us
Why then will we not accept the precious gift he is giving to us – the gift of life, yes abundant life. If God didn’t hesitate to put everything on the line for us, embracing our condition and exposing himself to the worst by sending his own Son, is there anything else he wouldn’t gladly and freely do for us? (Romans 8:32). Will he not give us the life that is far better than what we dream of?
Hear what he says to you, “I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out – plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for. When you call on me, when you come and pray to me, I’ll listen. When you come looking for me, you’ll find me.” “You shall seek me, and find me, when you shall search for me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:11-13).
Do you feel this love burning as a fire in your heart? Do you find yourself uncomfortable right now? Do you feel a discontent within you? That is the love of God drawing you to Himself. He has searched you out and found you. He will not let you wander about aimlessly in life, as sheep without a shepherd. However, you must allow him, for he would not do anything if you don’t allow him. Cry out to Him now and surrender yourself to him so that he can lead you.
One of the ways of realizing God’s marvellous love is that he does not force anyone to love him back. He loves you whether or not you love him back. However, he is very delighted if you’ll love him back because that’s the only way you can live your life to the fullest. He desires the best for you, but you have to decide to allow him do what he has planned to do. That is why he continues to woo and persuade you. God’s love is indeed marvellous!
